How to Remove a Background From a Portrait

CutMyBG

A portrait, headshot, or profile picture is a photo of a person, usually from the shoulders up. The useful result is the person without the room, so you can place them on a plain color or a new backdrop.

Remove a photo background

Start with a clear headshot

Crop so the face and shoulders fill the frame, and leave a little space around the hair. A plain wall is easier than a busy office. If the photo is a wide shot of a group, crop to one person first. CutMyBG may keep more than one figure when several people are equally clear.

Check hair, ears, and glasses

After the removal, drag the comparison slider and look at the hairline, flyaway hairs, ears, and the gap between the neck and the collar. Fine hair often keeps a fringe of the old wall color. Glasses can keep a patch of the room inside the lens, which is often correct, because that is what the lens shows.

General photo problems, including motion blur and shadows, are covered in how to remove a background from a photo.

Use the PNG as a profile picture

The download is a transparent PNG, not a new colored backdrop. If a site asks for a photo on white or on a brand color, place the PNG on that color in an editor and export the file the site accepts. The checkerboard in CutMyBG is only a preview. How to confirm the file is actually transparent is explained in making an image background transparent.
